A Sustainable Fiber Crop​

NileFiber™ is a domesticated cultivar patented by TreeFree Solutions, Inc.
NileFiber™ is in the Arundo donax family but has certain physical traits that make it identifiable. NileFiber™ is protected by patent plant regulations. 
In 2012 the company filed a plant patent naming it “NileFiber”. Two main attributes of the cultivar are that it looks different than other members of the Arundo donax family and it is also very robust, giving it a superior per acre crop yield.

TreeFree Biomass Solutions, Inc. (TreeFree) is a biotech company that was founded in 1996. Since then, TreeFree has been focused on the creation of a world-class scientific research and development team with the ability to develop innovative patented applications. A 10,000-acre NileFiber biomass farm CO2 sequestration is expected to be 120 tons per acre. That 10,000 acres will then equate to 1.2 million tons of CO2 captured, resulting in the equivalent of removing 210,526 cars from US roads and saving 2.97 million acres of rainforest per year.

A 10,000 Acre Case Study

TreeFree Solutions Inc.has worked with the University of Washington to study the specific abilities of NileFiber to capture carbon from the air. Based on our formulas and using a 10,000-acre farm as an example of a biomass crop, the following would apply:

A 10,000-acre NileFiber biomass farm CO2 sequestration is expected to be 120 tons per acre. That 10,000 acres will then equate to 1.2 million tons of CO2 captured, resulting in the equivalent of removing 210,526 cars from US roads and saving 2.97 million acres of rainforest per year.

These are incredible numbers not only for the simple example of a 10,000-acre plantation but for the vision of what the future of clean air in our county and other countries could actually look like. These formulas are powerful evidence and provide a beginning to restore the world’s air quality for a cleaner future. With countries like China moving to increase coal consumption at a staggering pace, the possibility of balancing the severe CO2 rates that are increasing annually brings promise to an environment already in need.

A Plan for Global Carbon Sequestration

The high growth rate and biomass production of NileFiber provides impressive figures in terms of sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). As a basis for calculation, assume that NileFiber will produce a conservative 20 tons of above ground dry biomass per acre per year. In addition, about 10 tons per year of below ground biomass accumulates for a total of 30 tons per acre each year.


NileFiber could have a significant impact on atmospheric carbon balances. Our calculations show that a single large NileFiber plantation could hold and repair atmospheric carbon dioxide in annual quantities equivalent to emissions from large fleets of vehicles. Enough of these large plantations placed around the world could ultimately stop the damage that CO2 is doing to our atmosphere, leaving little or no environmental footprint from vehicles that are currently driving on our planet.


Environmental Benefits

NileFiber is a perennial grass that grows so vigorously it can be harvested annually. When grown as a crop it drastically reduces soil erosion compared to annual crops because annual plowing and seeding are not necessary. It also returns essential nutrients to the soil. NileFiber is a fast growing grass that proliferates during the warm seasons of the year. During colder months it becomes dormant and in this state is able to survive temperatures well below freezing.

Strategic Environmental Benefits of NileFiber™​

Superfund or Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA) is a United States federal law designed to clean up sites contaminated with hazardous substances as well as broadly defined "pollutants or contaminants". Superfund also gives authority to federal natural resource agencies, states and Indian tribes to recover natural resource damages caused by releases of hazardous substances.


CleanSweep™ - NileFiber can be used for the Phytoremediation of contaminated soils and water. Other toxins found in the soil of landfills can be cleansed by planting NileFiber. NileFiber, through a process called photosynthesis, converts massive amounts of carbon dioxide into life-enhancing oxygen.

As a blueprint for the organization's commitment to sustainability, the United Nations released 17 Sustainable Development Goals that provide a blueprint for governments, the private sector, and civil society to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. To do our part, TFBS looked at their 17 goals and identified how the company contributes to these goals through our operations or how the company can create programs to help contribute. These 17 goals are listed below with their definitions and TFBS's contribution to each goal.

TreeFree's contributions to the Sustainable Development goals stem from a few basic concepts rooted in the three pillars of sustainability (Economic, Environmental, and Social):

  1. Economic: TreeFree's agricultural foundation shifts the forestry and fossil fuel industries from centralized resource-owning companies to decentralized farmers around the world producing feedstock for an array of products. In doing so, TreeFree creates new jobs for farmers globally, boosting people's and communities' incomes. Increased wealth helps address and alleviate issues throughout the 17 goals.  

  2. Environmental: TreeFree's use of NileFiber as a feedstock instead of forests and fossil fuels both decreases total carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and safeguards against deforestation.
